Art and literature
Art was different back than unlike today. It was based on its location in Europe. Charlemagne the greatest ruler, was the one who brought an interest in the arts to everyone. Examples are paintings and music. During the Middle Ages, art could be divided into two periods: Byzantine art and Romanesque art. Byzantium art was characterized by its realism (because it was in the dark ages). The artist during this time really didn't try to make their painting realistic at all! Paintings were usually pretty flat and were very sad and somber.
Romanesque art lasted only for 200 years (1100 a.d. -1300 a.d.). This art was influenced by Roman art and Byzantium art. Its focus was mainly on the Christian religion. It included paintings, sculpture, and illuminated manuscript etc.
