Clergy
The clergy were the religious leaders (Priest, monks, etc). They were in charge of the church and made everyone pay taxes for, "everlasting life." Even though they were the official head of the church, the priest weren't as rich as the bishops and had to also pay taxes. This tax went out to both the priest and the rabbi. The catholic church was at the very top of the list when it came to people. The bishops were the richest, even though the priest and pope were a the very top.
The church would often take advantage of the citizens, because they didn't know how to read, but the people in the church did. They would often tell lies about their god and make up stories. Later on, people were able to read and started to challenge the Catholic Church. Eventually, more things happened like this and it ended up leading to the Renaissance. Many other reasons like the Crusades formed because of religion and religious freedoms.
